When Anelace is sent to investigate the accidents plaguing mining operations in a remote star system, Captain Garrett Heskan and his officers soon suspect more than random mishaps are in play. As clues to the mystery unfold, the stakes quickly turn deadly in a cat-and-mouse game to expose the true threat while protecting the civilian miners in the system. Heskan’s first command could be his last, as Anelace is outnumbered and outgunned in her fight for survival.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
As a long-time reader of science fiction, and a former Air Force officer, writing military scifi was a natural place for me to start. I also wanted to write a scifi series with clear character story arc that begins and ends. This Corner of the Universe is Book 1 in Captain Garrett Heskan’s story.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
The main character in the This Corner of the Universe series is Garrett Heskan. He starts Book 1 with his first “official” command as captain of a small Brevic Fast Ship, BRS Anelace. The remaining four books in the series (I’m working on Book 4 right now) follow his story through a number of twists and turns. Heskan himself is an amalgamation of many people, fictional and real, that I’ve encountered while reading and in the Air Force. I wanted someone easy to relate to, someone who doesn’t always have the right answers and who functions despite his self-doubts. I wanted readers to actually believe that such a person could exist (and in fact most often does). I’ve read a lot of sci-fi where the main character has only minor flaws and you always know that no matter how many people disagree with the character, the main character is correct. That’s not the case with Heskan. He makes mistakes and the “real” story of his series is how he moves past them… starting with one mistake in particular on his previous ship, BRS Derringer.
