What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Under a Fallen Sun was adapted from a short story I wrote in college called "Village of the Gargoyles." My mom read the story at the time and a couple of plot-related questions from her started the wheels turning. I explored the backstory of my main characters more and eventually flesh the short story out into a full-fledged novel.
How is writing Science Fiction different from other genres?
One thing I love about science fiction is it allows you to stretch the boundaries of your imagination and discover ideas and concepts through alien worlds and alien creatures. You can explore off the map instead of simply traveling from point A to point B as you do with numerous other fiction genres.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
I always visualized college students getting caught up in incredible circumstances they were ill-equipped to deal with, juxtaposed by a military veteran who had enough survival training to keep hope alive. As I fleshed out the story, Paige and Todd emerged to the forefront in propelling the action forward. Their brother and sister dynamic fascinated me. What lengths would you go to in order to find a missing sibling or help a sibling survive a dangerous situation? They truly form the heart of this story.
